    Hey there, seems like you’re an expert with this specific Ford radio. I have an E7AF-18B865-AA That I would like to add to a 1980s restoration I am doing. I have found some diagrams online and got it to power up, but I cannot get the illumination bulb to light. Also the cassette doesn’t work. Not sure if it’s related. Any chance we could connect privately to discuss? I’d appreciate it.

    • @gadget73
      @gadget73 6 днів тому

      you mean the single bulb by the power light? There is a separate power line for that, don't have the book in front of me but maybe the blue/pink? It runs off the dash illumination circuit. Tape deck is unrelated to the light, but could be a lot of possible issues. Usually the belts are shot at least and sometimes the mechanism gets jammed from petrified oil.

    • @billpaskoules6872
      @billpaskoules6872 5 днів тому

      Thanks for replying! From the wiring diagram I have, the org/black and blu/pink appear to be both for illumination. One goes to an illumination relay and the other to dash illumination. When I power each, nothing happens. But when I ground the blu/pnk, the station display gets brighter. Likely bright for daytime driving, whereas the dimmer is for night along with the dash illumination. I do realize the speaker outputs go to the factory amp, but the amp is long gone and I wanted to use a higher wattage aftermarket one anyway. Your help is most appreciated!

    • @gadget73
      @gadget73 5 днів тому

      @@billpaskoules6872 are you sure the bulb is actually good? If thats out and the dash light circuit isn't connected it doesn't "see" ground and goes to display dim mode. These could be used directly to speakers or through the amp. output is speaker level. Most of them had the rear speakers run right off the radio and the fronts went through the amplifier. If your amp has speaker-level input you're good to go.

    • @billpaskoules6872
      @billpaskoules6872 4 дні тому

      I tested the bulb separately and it lit up. I will also double check the socket to assure the contacts are good. I will also run power to the socket with the light inserted and see what I get. My plan is to run a 4 channel aftermarket amp. For the speaker output, there are 4 wires. Do you know if the solid black is common (-) then the other 4 wires are RF, LF, RR, LR? Know the color codes for each speaker location? Once I get this settled, I plan to install your aux input!

    • @gadget73
      @gadget73 3 дні тому

      @@billpaskoules6872 depends on the specific radio. All of them can be common to ground. Some of them are higher power and have both a speaker + and speaker - for the rear channel. If you go speaker + to ground it makes 1/2 the power as it does speaker + to speaker -. If thats what you have, just ignore the other two wires. I don't have the book in front of me to tell you what color is what though. If you have the EVTM for the car its in there though.

    Warning for those disassembling the cross slide screw. One might get the impression that removing the coaxial (crank end) of the cross slide requires only unscrewing the nut casting directly behind the crank. This is what I thought because that's what you did (in reverse) when installing it. Yes, I did note that you aligned the key in the coax end with the key-way cut in the lead screw.. What I didn't notice is the Apron was absent when threading the crank assy onto the carriage. Therefore there was no interference when installing it. The bottom line is ( if the apron is installed ) the operator must loosen the two slotted apron screws enough to clear the mating gears in the Apron. . If you don't the crank assembly's power feed gear flutes will prevent its removal where it's meshing with the apron gears. This valuable info was conveyed to me by Dean at ua-cam.com/video/hGhaOVU8EPs/v-deo.html Dean responded to my plea within hours of me posting by problem removing the crank casting. This fact doesn't diminish the worth of your video though. Thank you for the video. Moreover a bigger thanks for not editing out those moments we all have searching for that pin, screw, nut or what ever. It was refreshing knowing it's not just ME! 🤪I hate myself for always being disorganized but I'm way too old to change now. Wakodahatchee Chris

I'm more concerned about how much they are willing to discount it and what they will do for me to make a purchase and to convince me theirs will be the best deal I'll find before I move on to another dealer. There was no shortage of these Grand Marquis back then, but every damned time I'd find the color and options I wanted, it was the hardest to get the dealer to make me the best deal on the one I liked the best.

    Most people don't realize how ground-breaking this Continental really was back in 1988. First front drive Lincoln with all the advanced tech to rival so many more expensive cars. I will have to say that the car's ONLY achille's heel was the air ride suspension. So many of these cars over a very short time found themselve sagged to the ground and needing special towing equipment to get these cars to the shop for repairs. Otherwise i've always had a sweet spot for these new Lincoln Continentals.

    • @gadget73

      honestly I'd say the air suspension was the high point. The transmission was the turd in the punch bowl, but I have a huge affinity for air suspension. Have had 3 Fox chassis 4 wheel air suspension cars now, all have worked exactly as they were meant to with lots of age and miles. Currently have a 200k mile 84 Conti and a 235k mile 91 LSC.

    Do you have the video for the 1988 Tracer? That is a very special car to me. In the summer of 1987, my grandmother sold her red 1980 Mercury Zephyr Boxtop 2-door sedan & bought a dark blue 1988 Mercury Tracer 3-door from James Lincoln/Mercury in Wakefield, MA. I had many rides in this car from 1987-1994 & loved every one of them. Plus, I would spend Sundays at her house either sitting in it or reading the owners manual while everyone else was watching MTV or VH-1. The only options that it had were power steering (optional on her 3-door, standard on this 5-door & wagon), A/C, automatic, & an AM/FM stereo, but to me, that was more than enough. 7 years ago, my Nana Cronan passed away at the age of 90, but I will always think of her every time I look at that modest little car........& one day, I hope to have one exactly like it for myself.

    I have a NOS Ford AM/FM cassette head unit with equalizer that I want to put in my '91 Mustang (it currently only has the usual bass/treble control head unit currently), but want Bluetooth added in the way you do it before putting it in the car. I like that you do this properly...where the signal from the Bluetooth switches automatically and that you are going direct into the preamp of the head unit vs FM modulation or how people are butchering their tape players sometimes when doing this work, and that its still controlled by the head unit's volume/tone/balances/etc. I want the best sounding Bluetooth module available used. Would you be willing to work on it? I saw in an old video of yours that you are in New Jersey, as I am. I also need work done on my radio with quad 8 track in my '77 Lincoln, but don't know if you work on the Ford radios that far back.

      I'm in NJ, which also means its cold right now. My mess of a workshop is not well heated and right now its just not a place I have any desire to be. I've got a couple of unrelated projects in the queue too so I don't really want to say I'm willing to take on more right now just because I know its going to be a good while before I could get to it. I have done older radios, did one for a friend's 68 Mustang not so long ago. The trick is the documentation, without a service manual it gets much more difficult if there are any problems. I have docs for 1991 Ford radios, don't have it for a '77.

(large can under the shield) has seemingly given it up and leaked, so no testing or power up until I get a chance to figure this thing out..... still gathering documentation. If the taper pin is still in there, the screw won't come out. The pin passes through a groove in the top of that tubular bit that the end of the feed screw goes through. Taper pins are a pain, if it absolutely will not go, maybe try heat, or sometimes people have had to drill them. All of mine came out luckily but some get proper stuck and need a good whack with a BFH and a good punch. I had cheap punches and they were deforming rather than driving the pins out. Better set fixed that.

      I won't absolutely guarantee it comes out of that side without checking, its been a while since I put this together. If you can get calipers on the pin it should tell you which is the fatter end though. I don't really know any special tricks other than using a good punch.

    I miss my 1988 Mark Vii LSC. 😢 They even got Bob Bonderaunt to talk about Lincoln's raciest model.... A fat, comfortable, classy, bad boy mustang gt in a tux. Lincoln is over due for a cheaper SL Mercedes competitor based on the mustang... Just picture how bad ass, totally rad that hot rod Lincoln would be .... That is definitely one of my fantasy roadsters/ vehicles. Too bad Lincoln is a dull tall, mushy handling, fake truck, station wagon on stilts for those who think being at the local library til it closes qualifies as a "wild night" type of company now. Building vehicles so boring that they're perfect for those who want self driving pods without steering wheels that they can be old in, on their way to check out discount funeral plots, because they got they're license within 10 years of WW2. Yawn! Build something sexy, or be forgotten. Even if it doesn't sell in big numbers it won't cost a fortune to build, and it could serve a that flag carrying halo car that can shock some life into your snore fest lineup. Most people can't even name a Lincoln product on sale rn, besides the cruise ship for retirees to practice dirt napping in, known as the Nap-it-gave-her... Oops, the navigatior. It won't matter what I called it because young people are busy gawking over the retarded, but brilliant Escalade V that will get people to walk into caddy dealerships. Lincoln buyers just use the hospice van because they're too old to be excited by thrilling , innovative, or daring products.😅😅 Ok, jokes aside, build that roadster halo car for Lincoln using the mustang chassis. Have the fastest model powered by electricity (even if I don't like it, it would speak to buyers), and slower models with turbo 4, 6, and V8 power plants you can pluck right from the tang like when you guys made a mock rolls two door, with red, white, and blue muscle under it's exaggerated, just shy of elegant hood. You could even build a vehicle that looks like a two door Bentley, powered by mustang parts, and sold at a discount... I bet it becomes a hot topic in automotive circles, with more than one exclaiming "Lincoln is back!", and all it would take is a beautifully styled, wood grain, and leather lined, rear wheel drive, gussied up Ford.
